Nebraska earned the nickname "The Cornhusker State" due to its rich agricultural heritage, particularly its significant corn production. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, before the advent of husking machinery, farmers in Nebraska manually husked, or removed the outer leaves from, corn. This labor-intensive process was integral to the state's economy and culture, highlighting the importance of corn cultivation to Nebraska's identity. [1] The term "Cornhusker" gained prominence when Charles S. "Cy" Sherman, a sportswriter for the Nebraska State Journal, coined it in 1899 to refer to the University of Nebraska's athletic teams. Prior to this, the teams had been known by various names, including the "Bugeaters."
